"Go to the Bush, Stop Harassing Youths on the Road" - Activist Gwanishu Blasts Security Operatives
Prominent activist Harrison Gwanishu has issued a scathing critique of security operatives in Delta State, urging them to redirect their focus from alleged harassment and extortion of young people on the roads to tackling the escalating issue of kidnapping within the state's bushlands.
Gwanishu's forceful statement comes just days after his resignation as an aide to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori Emu, citing the worsening insecurity situation as a key factor in his decision.
In a strongly worded message, Gwanishu asserted, "Kidnappers are in the bush, not on the road. Go to the bush and stop harassing and extorting young people on the road." He further accused security agencies of lacking a concrete strategy to combat the kidnappers who "have continued to kill our people."
Specifically targeting "Operation Sweep," a security outfit in the state, Gwanishu claimed that the unit has "done more harm to innocent civilians" and has no documented record of actively engaging in responses to violent crimes. He expressed dismay over the government's continued funding of Operation Sweep while allegedly neglecting the Anti-Kidnapping Squad and local vigilante groups that he claims are actively engaged in combating the kidnappers.
Gwanishu's statement included a direct appeal to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori Emu, urging him to take immediate action. "His Excellency @Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori Emu Kingsley should as a matter of urgency restructure the office of DG SECURITY headed by David Tonwe and mandate them to follow their Standard Operating Procedures," Gwanishu stated, emphasizing the need for a more effective and targeted approach to security management in the state.
The activist's bold pronouncements highlight the growing public frustration over the persistent issue of kidnapping and the perceived misdirection of security efforts in Delta State. His resignation and subsequent public criticism are likely to intensify the scrutiny on the state government's strategies for addressing the escalating security challenges and protecting its citizens. The call to action for a restructuring of the security apparatus underscores the urgency and seriousness of the situation as viewed by concerned stakeholders.
