Pastor Ebuka Obi Denies Connection to Woman in Viral Fake Testimony Video
The controversy erupted after a video circulated widely on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), showing a woman testifying during a service led by Prophet Obi. In her testimony, she claimed divine intervention had enabled her to purchase a house valued at ₦500 million. However, subsequent reports and investigations revealed that the woman is, in fact, a local beverage vendor, and her testimony was a fabrication.
In a direct response to the escalating controversy, Prophet Obi addressed his congregation and the public, clarifying that he has no personal relationship or prior knowledge of the woman. He explained that she, like many others, attended the church service and chose to share her testimony. He stressed that his church welcomes numerous testimonies daily, and it is not feasible to verify the veracity of each one.
"I said it last month that my name would be all over the media. I said the media would be shaking, making it look real, but it’s all fake," Prophet Obi stated, suggesting that the incident was part of a broader attempt to discredit his ministry. He further asserted that he had received information from fellow clergymen in the Eastern region of Nigeria indicating that bloggers were being sponsored to disseminate negative information.
"Now, do I know her? Does any member know her? She came to testify, just like hundreds of others who come here daily. If the house she claimed to own is fake, then it is her who lied before God and His altar — not the ministry," he emphasized. Prophet Obi argued that if the woman's testimony was indeed false, her dishonesty was directed towards God and the sacred space of the altar, and not against his church or his leadership.
The incident has sparked widespread debate about the authenticity of testimonies in religious settings and the responsibilities of religious leaders in verifying such claims. Prophet Obi's response has sought to deflect blame from his ministry, placing the onus of accountability squarely on the woman who delivered the false testimony.
