Financial Advisor Threatens Billion Naira Lawsuit Against Burna Boy Over Song Usage
A new legal battle may be brewing for Afrobeats star Burna Boy, as self-proclaimed financial advisor GheGhe has announced plans to sue the artist for one billion naira. The lawsuit stems from Burna Boy's recent performance in Kenya, where he incorporated GheGhe's hit song "Opueh" into his set.
The controversy unfolds amidst a separate scandal involving Burna Boy and Lagos socialite Sophia Egbueje. Egbueje alleges that Burna Boy reneged on a promise to buy her a Lamborghini in exchange for a romantic relationship, claims he subsequently mocked in a freestyle. This freestyle, performed during his Kenyan show, notably featured the chanting of "Opueh," the title of GheGhe's track.
GheGhe, whose song gained popularity during a previous social media dispute involving Saidaboj, now claims Burna Boy's unauthorized use of "Opueh" constitutes copyright infringement. In a video statement, GheGhe asserted that the song is trademarked and that Burna Boy "doesn't know the trouble he's gotten himself into."
The dispute adds another layer of complexity to the already swirling controversy surrounding Burna Boy, who has yet to publicly respond to GheGhe's legal threat. The outcome of this potential lawsuit remains to be seen.
