Nigeria (October 1, 1960)  The British colonial rule formally began in the 19th century and merged into the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria in 1914.  Rising nationalist movements led by figures such as Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, and Ahmadu Bello pushed for self-governance through constitutional conferences in London throughout the 1950s.
