This Is Africa": Shaffy Bello Sparks Debate On Respect After Addressing Youths Calling Her By First Name

Nollywood actress Shaffy Bello has sparked widespread discussion online after sharing her strict stance on boundaries, respect, and traditional African values when interacting with the younger generation.

Speaking on the cultural expectations surrounding age and deference, the veteran screen icon revealed how she handles younger individuals who address her casually.

"When a child calls me by my name, I pull them closer and tell them, 'You haven't earned the right, and you never will,'" Bello stated. "Even children in the U.S. call me 'Ma'am'. This is Africa after all."

Her comments come amid a broader ongoing debate about modern social interactions, Western influence, and the preservation of African etiquette.

In many African societies, addressing elders by their first name without a title (such as "Aunty," "Ma," or "Sir") is traditionally viewed as a sign of disrespect.

While traditionalists have praised Bello for upholding cultural standards, some younger social media users argue that respect is mutual and should not depend solely on age or hierarchical titles.

Bello’s firm stance reaffirms her commitment to preserving traditional manners, making it clear that despite global exposure, foundational African values remain non-negotiable for her.
