South Africa ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ: Arthur Mafokate Hits Cici with R1.5 Million Defamation Lawsuit as Legal Battle Reignites

The protracted court drama between Arthur Mafokate, a veteran of the Kwaito music genre, and his ex-partner, singer Busisiwe “Cici” Thwala, has now reached a new dramatic trajectory. Arthur has decided to roll out a massive defamation lawsuit of R1.5-million against ex-lover Thwala at the Johannesburg High Court.

The affected music mogul is a 56-year-old, alleging that his reputation and livelihood have now been put at risk by social media content created by Cici in late 2025.

Per the court papers, the legal team of Mafokate contends that the posts by Thwala in September of the preceding year were not only offensive, with the intention to cause the complainant emotional distress in the form of a loss of professional standing and stature as a consequence.

The disputed posts allegedly covered the horrific 2017 incident that brought their relationship to an end, with Thwala accusing Mafokate of assaulting her and almost murdering her, according to the videos, photos, and messages she allegedly sent to followers on the networks. The disputed messages allegedly include photos of x-rays pertaining to a pelvic surgery procedure that she has publicly acknowledged she underwent.

A History of Legal Deadlocks

Legal Deadlocks

This case represents the latest instalment in a bitter feud that has been ongoing for almost a decade. At the forefront of their feud is an incident in June 2017, where Cici claimed that she was dragged by the car of Mafokate in a dispute, whereas he purportedly claimed that he was attacked by her.

In particular, Mafokate was previously acquitted on assault charges connected to the same incident. There has been a parallel experience for the two in the sense that criminal charges filed by each against the other have been previously dismissed or resulted in an acquittal.

Current Status

Mafokate has not yet commented on the matter, while attempts to contact Cici's attorney regarding this inquiry have not been fruitful as of yet. The Johannesburg High Court will now be expected to assess the allegations of defamation raised in this court action.

The case once again shines a spotlight on the "cancel culture" era and the legal consequences of airing private grievances on public platforms, especially when criminal courts have already delivered a verdict.
