Kenya 🇰🇪: Murang’a Pastor Embarks on 80-Hour Tree-Hugging Marathon for Cancer Awareness

In a unique display of endurance and environmental symbolism, local cleric Pastor Jimmy Irungu has officially launched an 80-hour "tree-hugging challenge" aimed at raising awareness for cancer.

The marathon event began on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at 9:00 PM in the heart of Murang’a Town. Pastor Irungu intends to remain in the embrace of the tree until Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 5:00 AM, totaling over three days of continuous dedication to the cause.

The challenge is designed to draw public attention to the rising cases of cancer within the region and the importance of early detection and support systems. By "hugging" the tree, Irungu symbolizes the need for the community to "embrace" those battling the disease and to protect life through both environmental and health consciousness.

"This isn't just about the physical challenge; it's about standing in solidarity with those who feel alone in their fight against cancer," supporters noted during the event's kickoff.

The 80-hour journey spans four days, requiring the pastor to endure the elements and physical fatigue. Starting late Sunday night, the challenge is set to cross the halfway mark on Tuesday evening before concluding in the early hours of Thursday morning.

As the clock ticks toward the finish line, local residents have begun gathering to offer moral support to the pastor, who remains steadfast in his mission to turn a simple gesture into a powerful message of hope for the community.
