As the January "back-to-work" season kicks in, popular content creator and health professional Nurse Judy has declared she has no fears regarding the common "househelp flight" after the December holidays.
While many employers struggle with domestic staff failing to return after traveling upcountry, Nurse Judy revealed that her retention strategy is built on competitive pay and mutual respect.
Speaking during an online session with her followers, Nurse Judy disclosed that she pays her domestic managers approximately KSh 35,000 per month. She pointed out that this figure is notably higher than the starting salaries of many professionally trained nurses working in Kenyan clinics and hospitals.
I pay my househelps about KSh 35,000 per month," she stated. "That is more than what many nurses in Kenya earn."
Nurse Judy emphasized that her approach to domestic management is rooted in the belief that fair compensation is the foundation of a professional relationship. Beyond the financial aspect, she highlighted the importance of how employees are treated within the home.
Offering a salary that competes with professional sectors to ensure financial stability, Treating staff with the respect deserved by any professional, Building an environment where employees feel valued enough to return after their break.
In Kenya, the first week of January is often characterized by homeowners venting on social media about "ghosting" househelps. Nurse Judy’s comments have sparked a wider conversation online about the correlation between domestic worker wages and the "disappearing" culture. By offering nearly double the average domestic wage, she believes she has secured long-term loyalty.
