Bafana Bafana Edge Angola in Gritty AFCON 2025 Opener

South Africa’s quest for continental glory is off to a flying start as Bafana Bafana secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Angola in their opening Group Stage match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Under the floodlights of a packed stadium, Hugo Broos’ men showed both clinical finishing and defensive resilience to claim all three points against a disciplined Palancas Negras side.

The South African side started with high intensity, controlling possession early on. The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when a slick passing move through the midfield found the clinical foot of the Bafana frontline, sending the traveling supporters into a frenzy.

Angola, however, refused to back down. They leveled the scoring early in the second half following a lapse in the South African defense, turning the match into a tense, end-to-end tactical battle.

The decisive moment arrived in the 78th minute. A perfectly weighted cross found its mark, allowing South Africa to reclaim the lead with a powerful header. Despite a late surge from Angola, including five minutes of stoppage time, Bafana Bafana held firm to secure the win.

Goals

SA: 2 goals, 6 shots on targets, 54% possession, and 1 yellow card

Angola: 1 goal, 4 shots on target, 46% possession, and 2 yellow cards

Speaking to reporters after the final whistle, the South African captain praised the team's mental fortitude.

"Starting a tournament like AFCON with three points is massive for our confidence. We knew Angola would be physical and organized, but we stuck to the plan and stayed patient. This is for the fans back home."

The victory puts South Africa in a strong position at the top of the group standings, easing the pressure ahead of their next fixture. For Angola, the performance showed promise, but they will need to find more clinical finishing if they hope to advance to the knockout stages.
