Nigeria: Delta Govt Cracks Down on 'Indecent Appearance' in Civil Service

The Delta State Government has implemented a new dress code for its public servants, banning what it describes as "indecent appearance." The directive, aimed at promoting a more professional and tidy image, prohibits a range of personal grooming choices for civil workers.

The new rules explicitly forbid male civil servants from having bushy beards, while also cracking down on certain styles for their female counterparts. Women are now barred from using artificial hair, including braids and weaves, as well as dyed hair, long eyelashes, and fake nails.

The circular outlining the new regulations was issued by the state's Head of Service and distributed to all ministries and government agencies. This move is part of a broader effort to instill discipline and project a more serious and formal demeanor within the public service.

This decision has sparked a debate among residents and civil servants. While some believe the rules are necessary to maintain a professional environment, others argue that they are overly restrictive and infringe on personal expression. The directive has been met with mixed reactions, with many waiting to see how strictly the new guidelines will be enforced.
