South Africa:Gospel Icon Rebecca Malope Awarded R1 Million in Landmark Settlement with Detergent Giant
Renowned gospel singer Rebecca Malope has reportedly secured a significant R1 million payout following an out-of-court settlement with Procter & Gamble South Africa. The legal dispute arose from the alleged unauthorized use of Malope's image on Ariel washing powder packaging long after her endorsement contract had expired.
The partnership between Malope and the global consumer goods giant began in 2016, with the celebrated artist serving as the face of Ariel washing powder. While the initial agreement saw several renewals, it officially concluded in September 2022. However, Malope's image reportedly continued to appear on products until as recently as 2025, prompting her to take legal action.
In April 2025, Malope filed a lawsuit against Procter & Gamble South Africa at the Pretoria High Court, citing the continued commercial use of her likeness without proper compensation. What was once a seemingly amicable business relationship had soured considerably.
Speaking to City Press, Malope expressed her disappointment with the company's lack of cooperation. "All we asked was to address the fact that I haven’t been paid, despite my image being used for the past couple of years," she stated. "Instead of working with us to resolve it, they were just not cooperative. That’s what’s most disappointing and hurtful."
Malope described the ordeal as "stressful," emphasizing her long-standing reputation for integrity in the music industry. "I’ve been working in this industry for over 36 years. People know that I carry myself with integrity. I take my work seriously. I’m a professional and I absolutely love what I do."
The settlement brings an end to the legal battle, with Malope receiving the compensation she sought, underscoring the importance of artists' rights and intellectual property.
