South Africa:Enhle Mbali Recalls Darkest Moment on Set, Citing Spiritual Battle During Filming
Actress and fashion designer Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa has revealed a profoundly unsettling and spiritually intense experience she underwent while filming a particularly dark scene several years ago. Mbali took to Instagram to share behind-the-scenes photos and reflect on what she described as a major personal test.
The scene in question, shot between 2020 and 2021, involved her character's initiation into a "dark world," a role that she says left her feeling spiritually burdened. "My character was just dark yena nje, and I needed cleansing through prayer every time I got home to separate me and her," Mbali disclosed.
However, one specific shoot day stood out for its eerie atmosphere. Mbali noted that the set designers had created an environment that was "too good of a job." She described the scene: "Red candles lit, sage burning, and with every single take my spirit felt a heaviness. It just didn’t feel OK in the environment."
Concerned by the palpable discomfort, she checked with her co-stars, who reportedly affirmed feeling the same way. "I’ve never felt so uncomfortable," she continued, "but as a thespian, I had to deliver. So I did. Through every line and action I prayed so hard—at times even forgetting my lines."
Despite the unsettling set and the heavy emotional toll, Mbali ultimately found peace in the moment. "Thank God I’ve been in the industry for this long and understand that if you relax, everything comes to you. I felt carried, and the discomfort and fear just disappeared."
Her takeaway from the experience was deeply spiritual. "I’ve never felt my guides and guardian angels surround me like they did. God was present to guard my spirit in a big way—all to keep you entertained," she reflected.
Mbali concluded her post with a powerful message to her followers about the importance of spiritual grounding, especially when navigating challenging environments: "Easy come, easy go. KEEP GOD IN YOUR AURA AT ALL TIMES. We’re only human, we need Him." Her candid revelation offers a rare glimpse into the spiritual demands that can sometimes accompany the craft of acting.
