South Africa: Controversial Businessman Vusi 'Cat' Matlala and Wife Face Attempted Murder Charges in High Court
Controversial businessman Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala and his wife, Tsakani Matlala, appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on Friday, facing charges of attempted murder in connection with a drive-by shooting targeting actress and media personality Tebogo Thobejane. The couple, along with two other co-accused, are implicated in the October 2023 incident in Sandton, where Thobejane's vehicle was fired upon, leaving her and her passengers wounded.
Thobejane, who has publicly expressed living in fear since the attack, survived the harrowing ordeal when a car pulled up alongside her BMW and opened fire.
Alleged Connections and Mounting Legal Woes
Matlala, who was apprehended in May 2025, has been a frequent subject on social media due to his alleged ties to high-ranking government and police officials. His name recently emerged during a press briefing by General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, where his connections to prominent figures, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, were highlighted.
The businessman, long rumored to operate questionable businesses and evade justice through his alleged political influence, is now embroiled in multiple legal battles. The attempted murder case, along with charges of conspiracy to commit murder, is set to be transferred to the Johannesburg High Court. Furthermore, authorities are working to consolidate additional charges from Pretoria West and Lyttleton into a single comprehensive case.
Past Controversies and New Revelations
Matlala has previously garnered headlines for allegedly securing a R360 million SAPS tender despite lacking formal qualifications—a deal reportedly flagged for corruption by slain whistleblower Babita Deokaran. Recent police raids on his properties also uncovered unlicensed firearms and luxury items, including a Rolex watch. Adding to his controversial profile, Matlala was reportedly found with a cellphone inside his prison cell during a recent raid.
In a resurfaced viral post, entertainment blogger Musa Khawula has also linked Matlala to the murder of popular DJ Sumbody.
Matlala's wife and the other co-accused will remain out on bail, with the case postponed until August.
