E Money, Days After EFCC Interrogation, Warns Nigerians Against Spraying Naira
Prominent Nigerian businessman and socialite Emeka Okonkwo, popularly known as E Money, has issued a public advisory urging Nigerians to refrain from spraying naira notes at celebratory events. This caution comes just days after his reported arrest and questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the very same practice.
On April 28, 2025, E Money was reportedly apprehended by EFCC operatives at his Lagos residence and subsequently taken to Abuja for interrogation. Sources indicated that his detention was connected to allegations of him spraying cash at a social gathering.
Following his release, the younger brother of singer KCee took to his official Instagram page to address the incident directly. In his post, E Money emphasized the legal ramifications of mishandling the national currency, advising Nigerians to celebrate responsibly and avoid potential penalties.
Acknowledging the illegality of spraying both naira and foreign currencies at parties, E Money encouraged citizens to adopt more appropriate ways of showing appreciation, such as placing money in designated receptacles like baskets, bowls, or boxes presented to the celebrant. He stressed that respecting the nation's currency is crucial in order to avoid fines and legal entanglements.
His message read:
“Attention! The EFCC reminds us: Spraying Naira (or any currency) at parties/events is against the law! Let’s celebrate responsibly and avoid fines. Respect our currency!
If you must give money at a party, make sure you put it in a basket or in a bowl or box in front of the person at the party and don’t drop any currency on the floor. This is advised by the EFCC. Ignorance it’s not going to be an excuse. Let us be aware and abide to the rules since it’s the law of the land.”
E Money's direct appeal, coming so soon after his own encounter with the EFCC, serves as a stark reminder of the legal prohibitions surrounding the spraying of naira and underscores the agency's stance on the matter. His message is likely to resonate with many Nigerians who frequently witness or participate in this cultural practice during social events.
