AY Comedian Recounts EFCC Invitation Over Currency Spraying, Advocates for Naira Respect
Popular Nigerian comedian and filmmaker, Ayo Makun, widely known as AY Comedian, has publicly shared details of his recent interaction with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding an incident of public currency spraying.
In a statement released yesterday, Wednesday, May 7th, AY revealed that he was invited by the EFCC on Monday, May 5th, to address an issue concerning the spraying of both Nigerian Naira and foreign currencies at a public event. This act is considered an offense under laws related to the abuse of the national currency.
AY expressed his appreciation to the EFCC and relevant authorities, stating that he was shown leniency after it was confirmed that the funds he sprayed were not linked to any criminal activities or illicit sources.
"I want to sincerely thank the EFCC and all authorities involved for their understanding and for granting me pardon based on confirmation that the money being sprayed is not linked to the proceeds of crime or any form of illicit funds," he stated.
Reflecting on the experience, AY emphasized that his interaction with the EFCC served as a significant learning opportunity. He further committed to actively promoting awareness about the proper handling and respect for the Naira.
Addressing his friends, family, and the general public, AY acknowledged the common cultural practice of spraying money at Nigerian celebrations like weddings, funerals, and parties. However, he stressed the legal implications of such actions. "It is important to understand that mutilating or abusing the Naira—whether by spraying, tearing, defacing, or mishandling—is not just a cultural practice but also a violation of Nigerian law. Such acts undermine the integrity of our national currency and can have serious legal consequences," he cautioned.
AY's disclosure follows a similar experience shared by actress and filmmaker Iyabo Ojo, who recently addressed her own invitation by the EFCC regarding the spraying of money at her daughter Priscilla's wedding to a Tanzanian singer. Ojo confirmed that she visited the EFCC office on May 5th, 2025, upon her return from the United Kingdom.
These incidents highlight the EFCC's increasing focus on the abuse of the Naira and serve as a reminder to public figures and the general populace about the legal ramifications of currency spraying, despite its cultural prevalence in Nigerian society.
