Tears Flow as Mohbad Honored at Headies 2025: Widow Wunmi Dedicates Awards to Son, Liam

The 17th Headies Awards, held on Sunday, April 27th at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos, witnessed a deeply moving moment as Omowunmi, the widow of the late beloved singer Mohbad (Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba), accepted posthumous honors on his behalf and poignantly dedicated them to their young son, Liam.

The atmosphere turned emotional as Mohbad was recognized for his significant contributions to the Nigerian music scene, posthumously winning two prestigious awards: "Best Street Music (Street-hop Artiste) of the Year" and the "Viewer’s Choice" award for his popular collaboration with Chike on the track “Egwu.”

Stepping onto the stage to receive the accolades, Omowunmi delivered a heartfelt speech that resonated deeply with the audience. She touchingly conveyed her enduring connection to her late husband, stating her refusal to refer to him as "late" because, in her heart, Mohbad's spirit lives on, particularly through their son, Liam.

With palpable emotion, Omowunmi expressed her belief that although young Liam may not yet comprehend the immense impact of his father's artistry, she is certain that he will one day grow to understand and appreciate the profound legacy Mohbad left behind.

"On behalf of myself, my son Liam, my husband’s immediate younger brother Adura, and the rest of the Imonelization family, we want to specially thank you for this award," she began, her voice filled with emotion.

She continued, "Although Mohbad isn’t here with us anymore, he lives on. I don’t like to address him as my late husband cause he lives forever, especially through our son Liam. Although he may be too young to grasp the depth of his father’s greatness, I know, and I believe that one day, he will know. Thank you so much Headies. Thank you for shining a light on my husband. Thank you for honouring his memory and legacy. It means so much to me, his son and the entire Imonelization."

Omowunmi's moving tribute served as a powerful reminder of Mohbad's lasting influence on the Nigerian music industry and the enduring love that continues to surround his memory. The moment was a poignant highlight of the Headies 2025, underscoring the profound impact of the young artist's life and work.
