Seun Kuti Slams Celebrities, Feminists for "Silence" on Senator Akpoti's Plight

Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti has ignited a social media firestorm by accusing prominent Nigerian celebrities and feminist groups of neglecting Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central. Kuti voiced his frustration, suggesting a stark contrast in public support compared to other high-profile cases.

In a recent Instagram post, Kuti pointedly questioned the absence of widespread solidarity for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, particularly from women's advocacy groups. He drew a parallel to the public outpouring of support for actress Annie Idibia during her divorce proceedings with musician 2Face, highlighting what he perceives as a double standard.

"Where is the same energy?" Kuti asked, implying that the level of public backing should be consistent when women face adversity. He further criticized the public's focus on celebrity gossip, such as the recent controversy involving Burna Boy and Sophia Egbueje's Lamborghini, while serious allegations of sexual harassment receive minimal attention.

Kuti's remarks have sparked debate online, with many users weighing in on the issue of selective activism and the perceived lack of support for female politicians facing challenges. The artist's post has amplified discussions about the role of public figures in addressing critical societal issues and the consistency of feminist activism in Nigeria.

His statement: About the sexual harassment case in the senate, I stand with the Senator [Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan] 100 per cent.

“Because she isn’t even the first one to make such allegation [against the Senate President]. It’s appalling that all these so-called women activists are all quiet.

They have something to say about Burna Boy’s alleged reneged promise to Sophia Egbueje but shy away from important matters…

“These kind of things cannot continue in this country. What that woman [Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan] is saying is very serious. And the celebrities will not come out to support her in this kind of matter, the way everybody had something to say to defend Annie against 2face.

“Many of these celebrities, especially Nollywood actors and actresses are benefiting from the government through fraudulent grants so they can never come out to speak on this kind of matter…. I can’t openly protest to demand justice for Natasha but I implore Nigerian women to support her.”
