The Nigerian House of Representatives is looking into allegations of bribery and has asked the head of the EFCC, as well as two well-known public figures, Bobrisky and Verydarkman to come and testify.
In a rather unsettling move that reeks of political maneuvering and potential ulterior motives, the House of Representatives, under the guise of upholding justice, has escalated its probe into bribery accusations that allegedly tarnish the image of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). However, many critics question whether this is a genuine attempt to hold the commission accountable or merely a power play. The House’s Joint Committees have, in what some describe as a dramatic and highly publicized gesture, summoned the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyode, to answer for these alleged crimes. According to a report by Channels TV, this invitation—ironically delivered in a formal letter on September 27, 2024, despite the sensationalism surrounding the case—seems aimed at making a spectacle of the situation. The committee, in a seemingly broad-sweeping demand, has also dragged the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service into the fray, insisting that they appear at a hearing on Monday, September 30. The inclusion of “all relevant officers” tied to these dubious allegations has sparked suspicions that this may be less about seeking truth and more about making headlines, as the timing and scope of the inquiry have raised eyebrows among political analysts and the public alike.
The bribery allegations against the EFCC were ignited by a leaked audio recording featuring Bobrisky, a controversial social media personality who was recently imprisoned for currency abuse. In the recording, Bobrisky claimed to have paid a hefty N15 million bribe to the EFCC in exchange for having money laundering charges dropped against him.Furthermore, he alleged that he was housed in a luxurious VIP facility rather than a standard prison, raising questions about the fairness and transparency of the EFCC's operations.
In response to these allegations, the House of Representatives has launched an investigation and has invited Bobrisky and VeryDarkMan, the social media influencer who released the recording, to testify before the committee. This move has sparked widespread debate and speculation, with many questioning the credibility of the allegations and the motives behind the committee's decision to involve these non-governmental figures in the investigation. Critics argue that the inclusion of Bobrisky and VeryDarkMan could potentially undermine the seriousness of the inquiry and distract from the real issues at hand.
