Chidimma Adetshina wins the Miss Universe Nigeria title.

Chidimma Adetshina, a former Miss South Africa contestant, has defied expectations to win the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 title. Adetshina was crowned at a ceremony on Saturday at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre in Victoria Island. She was competing against 25 other contestants from Taraba State for the Miss Universe Nigeria title and the significant N10-million (R112 000) cash prize.

After her victory, she wrote on X: “Congratulations to Chidimma Adetshina, our new Miss Universe Nigeria 2024! She’s ready to represent us with grace and power on the global stage. Introducing your Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, Chidimma Adetshina.

On August 5, the Miss South Africa organization contacted the Department of Home Affairs to investigate Adetshina's citizenship. Her mother, a Mozambican, is accused of applying for a fake South African ID in 1995 after stealing the identity of a South African in 1982. Her father is Nigerian.

Amidst the controversy surrounding Adetshina's eligibility to participate in the national pageant, requests were made for an investigation into the matter. According to the department, both Adetshina and her mother provided written consent for the investigation.

Two days before the Miss South Africa pageant, Adetshina withdrew due to increasing pressure and public criticism. A few days later, she was invited to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant. Many South Africans, who denied being xenophobic or afrophobic, supported Adetshina and voted for her despite the controversy. Adetshina spoke to the media about her challenging journey after winning the Miss Universe Nigeria title in Lagos. She expressed gratitude for the love and support she received. Adetshina will represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe 2024 pageant in Mexico in November.
