Condemning the "Japa mentality" Nigerians have, Wale Ojo says it's embarrassing.
In an interview with ThisDay, award-winning actor Wale Ojo claimed that his vision is for Nigerians to lose interest in traveling outside the country, also known as ‘japa’. He highlighted his goals for Nigeria, adding that despite spending many years overseas, his love for the country has never faltered.
Expressing his myriad aspirations, Wale Ojo reflected on his years abroad, acknowledging it would have been easy to never return to Nigeria. He could have remained in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, or even Russia, continuing his work there. However, his love for Nigeria remains unwavering. He emphasized his stance on the japa trend, finding the mentality embarrassing.
Ojo emphasized his commitment to being part of the solution despite Nigeria’s numerous challenges, striving to realize his vision for the country. “I have a lot of visions for Nigeria, one of which is a country where everybody doesn’t want to ‘japa’. The ‘japa’ mentality, I think, is embarrassing and unfortunate. When I go to the United States or anywhere else, Nigerians are applauded for their ingenuity,” the actor explained. “When I return home, I want to contribute to solving the many problems we face. I don’t just want to talk about the problems; I want to actively be part of the solution. I have implemented various initiatives to contribute to this solution. If the government wants to engage with the creative industry, they should approach people like us because we have a vision for the country; we don’t just follow blindly.”
